Facts About Labrador Retriever Puppies

Labrador retrievers or Labs are one of the most popular dog breeds in America. Their intelligence and friendliness make them ideal first dogs and dogs for families. However, despite their popularity, they’re not for everyone. Learn more facts about Lab puppies from Doggie Dude Ranch in Ames, IA.

Labs Are Intelligent

Although originally bred to be the perfect partner for duck hunting, Labs are successful in a wide variety of jobs. Labs can be found working as sniffer dogs, search and rescue dogs, therapy dogs, and show businesses. Lab puppies can start basic training early. They can begin housetraining as soon as they come home.

Labs Need Plenty of Exercises

When you are bursting with energy, it’s hard to focus on anything. Labrador puppies are the same way. They need at least one good walk a day and plenty of play sessions. This helps burn off energy and keep them healthy. This also makes it easier for a Lab puppy to pay attention to you and learn new commands.

Labs Are Easy to Groom

Labs need regular brushing and nail trimming. However, even if your Lab puppy does not need a lot of bathing, brushing, or nail clipping, it’s best to introduce grooming sessions when young. This makes the grooming process familiar and makes for more cooperative dogs when they grow up to be 55 to 80 pounds.

Lab Puppies Need Their People

If you live alone and work full-time outside the home, then a Lab puppy is not for you. Labrador retriever puppies hate being left alone. They can develop bad habits when left alone because they are frantic to be with you. If you do not have a family member to spend time with your Lab, consider doggy day-care or hire a dog walker.
