Kitten Care

Doggie Dude Ranch provides kitten care in Ames, IA. If you have a young kitten or are expecting one soon, we can help. Kitten care is important for several reasons. First, kittens are very fragile and need extra care to stay healthy. Second, they are not yet immune to diseases and can easily become sick. Finally, they are very active and need a lot of attention. If you've got a new kitten, here's how Dr. Becky can help.

Kitten Care

Spay and Neuter Surgeries

One of the most important things you can do for your kitten is to have it spayed or neutered. A simple spay or neuter surgery will help your kitten stay healthy and reduce its risk of several types of cancer. This surgery is also important for population control. Every year, too many homeless cats are euthanized. Spaying or neutering your kitten will help reduce this problem.

Pet Vaccinations

Your kitten will need a series of vaccinations to protect it from disease. We can provide all of the pet vaccinations your kitten needs, as well as any booster shots it may need later in life. Vaccines ensure that your kitten does not get preventable diseases. The most common vaccines recommended for kittens include:

  • Feline panleukopenia (also called "distemper")
  • Feline calicivirus
  • Feline herpesvirus type I
  • Rabies

We also recommend that all kittens be tested for feline leukemia virus (FeLV).

Microchipping

Our veterinarian will also recommend microchipping your kitten. This is a simple and painless procedure that will help ensure your kitten is returned to you if it ever gets lost. The microchip contains contact information so you can be reached easily if your pet is found.

Regular Veterinary Care

It is important to bring your kitten in for regular check-ups. A veterinarian can provide all of the routine care your kitten needs to stay healthy and happy. This includes things like nail trims, deworming, and flea/tick prevention. Once your kitten has been checked out and is done with its initial vaccines, annual examinations are crucial. These will help us catch problems early and keep your kitten healthy.
