Puppies for Sale

It's exciting to look at Labrador retriever puppies for sale ads and think about what fun it would be to get a puppy. This is a loving, intelligent, and almost insanely cute breed. Here are some facts you need to know about Labrador retrievers or Labs, from Doggie Dude Ranch in Ames, Iowa.

The Purebred Advantage

Once upon a time, you brought home a puppy and had no idea how big he or she would get. The advantage of purebreds is that you have a general idea of their adult size. Some will be a little larger or smaller, but on the whole, Lab puppies will grow up to 55 to 80 pounds and two feet tall. Males tend to be on the larger and heavier side.

Puppies Need a Lot of Attention

Labrador retrievers are the most popular dog breed in North America for a reason: they love to be around their people. This fascination with people makes them pay close attention to you. This also means that they hate to be alone and should not be left alone for more than a few hours. Not only can they get into mischief, but they can develop separation anxiety.

Playtime with Labrador Puppies

Puppies like to play by grabbing hold of a toy, shaking, or chewing it. When playing tug with your puppy, he may growl. This is normal. Lab puppies also like to play fetch, but they are not born knowing how to do this. You need to teach them. Good toys for Lab puppies include durable chew toys and large tug toys. Never use cat toys, as they are small enough for a puppy to swallow whole and choke.

Puppies Make a Mess

Labrador retriever puppies are smart, but they do have small bladders. Like children, they are prone to accidents even when they know where to potty. Just assume that your new Lab puppy will have accidents in the home. They need to go outside when they wake up, after a meal, when they exercise, and about every couple of hours during the day. It's normal for male puppies to squat when urinating. Legs don't lift until they are six to twelve months old.

Puppies Explore the World with Their Mouths

Like human babies, Labrador retriever puppies for sale will place just about anything in their mouths. This means everything. If you don't want your designer shoes in a puppy's mouth, they need to be kept out of a puppy's reach. Get down on your hands and knees so you are about the size of a pup. See what a puppy may grab. Things like household chemicals, electrical wires, and trash cans all need to be taken off the floor.
